Fort Lauderdale, known throughout America as a major spring break resort, has recently completely reinvented itself and is now considered to be an upbeat, cosmopolitan tourist destination, full of major attractions and recreational activities.

Home to a number of spectacular marinas, waterways and canals, Fort Lauderdale is full of yachts and boats of all sizes, together with many historic sites, cultural districts and spectacular beach areas. Port Everglades in the city serves as Florida's deepest harbor, where many enormous cruise liners regularly dock. Nearby, the Fort Lauderdale Beach district features a long promenade, lined with hotels, bars, restaurants and shops.




Located on Eller Drive, in the Port Everglades area, is the official Fort Lauderdale Convention and Tourist Information Center, which is open Monday to Friday throughout the year. In the Progresso Village area, just a few miles to the north, is the County of Broward Convention and Visitors Bureau, standing on East Broward Boulevard, near to the Broward County Historical Commission.

The city's appealing Mars area (between Vistamar Street and Rio Mar Street) is where you will find the best selection of hotels and motels in Fort Lauderdale, many of which stand right next to the beachfront. Hotels are particularly concentrated along El Mar Drive, the Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard, Holiday Drive, the North Ocean Boulevard, Seabreeze Boulevard and the South Ocean Lane. A number of hotels can also be found near to the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL), located to the south and close to the city of Hollywood. Fort Lauderdale features many superb tourist attractions, including the Flamingo Gardens - with around 60 acres / 24 hectares of lush botanical gardens and an abundance of natural and exotic beauty; Jungle Queen Riverboat Tours - a traditional Mississippi riverboat, providing guided sightseeing tours; Glassbottom Boat Tours - the perfect way to view Fort Lauderdale's breathtaking coral reefs and underwater marine creatures; the Pompano Park Harness Track - the only pari-mutuel harness racetrack in Florida; the Riverwalk Downtown - an important green belt area within the city, with picnic areas, walking and jogging trails, and street entertainers; and Mills Pond Park - a big city park offering many recreational and sporting activities in this sunny city.

Other important tourist attractions in Fort Lauderdale include the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation - with information about the history of the area, once the native land of the Seminole Indians; the Old Fort Lauderdale Village - a historic district with Broward County's largest collection of late 19th- to early 20th-century buildings; and the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church - one of the city's most famous churches, towering high into the sky. Tourist attractions located close to Fort Lauderdale include the Anne Kolb Nature Center - in nearby Hollywood, Florida, with many outdoor nature-based activities and a multi-level aquarium; the Hollywood North Beach Park - a popular public beach with clean white sands and good facilities; the Miami Metro Zoo - cage-free and one of Miami's most popular tourist attractions, just a relatively short drive away; the Quiet Waters Park - a high-tech water center, full of tunnels and fast slides; the Sawgrass Recreation Park - guided airboat tours through the Florida Everglades; and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino - close to both Miami and Fort Lauderdale, a major tourist attraction in its own right, with an enormous casino.
